Junior Infant Nursery Rhymes

26th Sep 2022

Junior Infants have begun their learning journey here at St. Mary's and with that are beginning to master nursery rhymes.

Nursery Rhymes provide bite-sized learning opportunities for young children to develop key developmental skills and can often be the trigger for hours of creative and open-ended play. They are a powerful learning source in early literacy and enable children to become interested in the rhythm and patterns of language. Many nursery rhymes are also repetitive which can support the development of memory and kickstart the practice of listening and speaking. Other key benefits:

  • Supporting phonological awareness and rhyme development
  • Sequencing skills
  • Improving memory
  • Improving concentration
  • Acquisition of new vocabulary
  • Developing thinking skills

We are encouraging our parents to practice Nursery Rhymes with their children at home. We will use Aladdin Connect to assign fun and active nursery rhyme homework activities each week. You can also see what Nursery Rhymes we are learning on our school website!
